Visit Burnsall
Burnsall Attractions
The village is known for its beautiful location framed by St. Wilfrid’s Church Tower, the 5 arched Victorian Bridge and Burnsall Fell.
It is a popular tourist destination all year round and is a great starting point for a myriad of walks around the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The scenery changes daily and there is always wildlife to see from a fleeting glimpse of the kingfisher on the river to the joyous sight of lambs on the fields in spring. The walks can be a gentle stroll along the River Wharfe or more strenuous hikes on the fells.
At the heart of the village is the picturesque Village Green; a perfect spot for a rest; a picnic or to indulge in a Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream. There are two pubs in the village. The Red Lion by the bridge and the Devonshire Fell. Both have accommodation and restaurants. There are also two cafes on the green serving a variety of food and drink and an Ice Cream shop.
The River Wharfe runs alongside the village green and is ideal for family fun. Wild Swimming takes place for those of a strong constitution; others can simply paddle, use a fishing net to catch tiddlers or mess about in boats. (Please remember that water can be dangerous and young children should always be supervised).
Games of cricket, badminton, Frisbee catching etc can be enjoyed on the green or just sit and watch the ducks floating on the river.
The village is packed with historic buildings. Only a short walk will take you to St. Wilfrid’s Church (open every day) with an outstanding exhibition of Anglo-Saxon and Viking stones, including crosses and hog back tombs. You will walk past Burnsall School which was built in 1602. Many of the houses date before this time.
