Further afield
Burnsall is one of the gems of the Yorkshire Dales National Park but there is so much more to see and do.
Upstream
One of the most popular walks from Burnsall is the riverside path up to Grassington (c3.5 miles). For the less energetic there is ample car parking at the Yorkshire Dales National Park centre where there is a shop and visitors centre. Grassington has a variety of shops, cafes and pubs. Grassington is a well filmed village and most recently the setting for Darrowby in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small.
There is a monthly Farmers Market and Christmas Markets in the square and a 40’s Weekend in September. The square is a popular meeting place for locals and also has Church House which has Coffee Mornings every Saturday run by local charities. At the top of the village is the Devonshire Institute (also known as the Town Hall). This building has two theatres and other function rooms and is in use all the time for a variety of clubs and societies. Grassington Players stage their productions at the Institute which have included the Amateur World Premiers of Calendar Girls. It is also the home of the Pantaloons who stage a Christmas Pantomime and Grassington Singers. There is also Table Tennis and Indoor Bowls…….and so much more.
Further up the Dale are the villages of Kettlewell and Buckden and not too far away is Malham.
Downstream
Walking the other way from Burnsall and the first village to be reached is Appletreewick; famous for its connection to the Dick Whittington story. Further down river are Barden Tower and Bolton Abbey.
The nearest towns are Ilkley and Skipton about 11 miles away. Both towns are full of superb shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes. Skipton Castle is well worth a visit and there are trips on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.
