Burnsall Primary School

Burnsall Primary School

The school is based in a beautiful 16th century school house, overlooking an area of outstanding natural beauty. The money for the school was donated by William Craven, Lord Mayor of London, who was born in Burnsall. A panel over the door records its founder “William Craven Alderman of London founder of this Schoole Anno Dmi 1601”. Accommodating children from the wider local area, the school consists of three classrooms where, through an exciting and stimulating curriculum, children are taught to strive for excellence. It is part of the Upper Wharfedale Primary Federation which also includes Grassington VC C of E School, Kettlewell School and Cracoe and Rylstone VC C of E School.

The idyllic rural location accommodates a large playground with access to a range of equipment and planters in which pupils grow their own fruit and vegetables. Younger children have a large garden area, partially covered, where they can enjoy a range of activities. Indoors, children feel at home in three large, traditional classrooms full of character. There is a school hall and a library, well stocked with recent and classic books. Access to the village hall is nearby and also a playing field which is used regularly in the summer months.

School Ethos

The school’s vision Be the Light is to help each child flourish into a caring, confident and resilient young person who has a love of learning. High aspirations are upheld for all children, through an innovative and inspiring approach to teaching and shared Christian values.
